Title : Redhat Security Update Fixes Autofs Privilege Escalation Vulnerability VUPEN ID : VUPEN/ADV-2007-4208 CVE ID : CVE-2007-5964
Rated as : Low Risk
Remotely Exploitable : No Locally Exploitable : Yes Release Date : 2007-12-13
Technical Description
A vulnerability has been identified in various Redhat products, which could be exploited by malicious users to gain elevated privileges. This issue is caused by an error in the default installed configuration of autofs where the entry for the "hosts" map did not specify the "nosuid" mount option, which could allow a local user with control of a remote nfs server to create a setuid root executable within an exported filesystem on the remote nfs server that, if mounted using the default hosts map, would allow the user to gain root privileges.
