A vulnerability has been identified in GNU tar, which could be exploited by attackers to bypass security restrictions and potentially compromise an affected system. This issue is caused by an input validation error in the "contains_dot_dot()" [src/names.c] function that does not properly validate file and directory names, which could be exploited by attackers to overwrite arbitrary files by tricking a user into extracting a specially crafted archive.
