Title : Redhat Security Update Fixes Multiple Cpio Vulnerabilities VUPEN ID : VUPEN/ADV-2005-2383 CVE ID : CVE-1999-1572 - CVE-2005-1111
Rated as : Low Risk
Remotely Exploitable : No Locally Exploitable : Yes Release Date : 2005-11-10
Technical Description
Redhat has released updated packages to correct two vulnerabilities identified in Cpio. The first issue is due to a race condition which allows local users to modify permissions of arbitrary files via a hard link attack on a file while it is being decompressed, whose permissions are changed by cpio after the decompression is complete. The second vulnerability is due to an error when creating files using the "-O" or "-F" options, which could allow local users to read or overwrite arbitrary files.
