Ubuntu has released a security patch to correct two vulnerabilities identified in bzip2. The first flaw is due to a race condition in the file permission restore code of bunzip2, which could be exploited by local attackers to gain read/write access to files of other users. The second vulnerability occurs when processing specially crafted bzip2 archives, which may cause an infinite loop in the decompressor (DoS).
Affected Products
Ubuntu 4.10
Ubuntu 5.0
Solution
Upgrade the affected package to version 1.0.2-1ubuntu0.1 (for Ubuntu 4.10), or 1.0.2-2ubuntu0.1 (for Ubuntu 5.04).
